P1257 VTEC System Malfunction
What does P1257 mean on a Honda?
P1257 — VTEC System Malfunction. This Honda-enhanced code applies to Civic, Accord, CR-V, Odyssey with VTEC.
Common causes of P1257
- Low engine oil level or degraded oil starving the VTEC system
- Clogged VTEC solenoid valve screen restricting oil flow
- Failed VTEC solenoid valve not switching cam profiles
- Wiring or connector fault in the VTEC solenoid circuit
- Wrong-viscosity oil preventing VTEC engagement
How to fix P1257
- Check engine oil level and condition first, VTEC will not engage on low or dirty oil
- Verify the correct oil viscosity for the engine
- Test VTEC solenoid operation with a Honda HDS scan tool around engagement RPM
- Remove and clean the VTEC solenoid screen, replace the solenoid if response stays flat
- Inspect wiring and connectors between the solenoid and the PCM
